Imam jailed in Bahrain for defaming the roler of Baharin

136942384An Islamic cleric has been jailed in Bahrain for inciting hatred against Sunnis and defaming King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifah.

 

A video presented to the court showed the imam, who was not named, describing Sunni Muslims as “infidels” during a Friday sermon, Gulf Daily News reported.

 

Details of the defamation of King Hamad were not reported.

 

The court heard the cleric was not authorised to preach but claimed he had been chosen by Shia residents.

He was jailed for two years for defaming the king and 12 months for insulting a religious sect.

 

Bahrain has experienced sectarian conflict since early 2011, with the Shia majority demanding greater recognition and rights from the Sunni rulers.
